Accanto a Kibera - L'Associazione

Here is our story.

The Accanto a Kibera Association was founded in 2021, but its members have been active for much longer. Some of us, in fact, without knowing each other, had already started supporting the activities of the Brothers of Charity in Kenya back in 2015, raising funds from friends and relatives that allowed us, even then, to help some children go to school, build a kindergarten in Kibera, bring water to the school, and construct the building in Isiolo where the sewing school is now located.

 

In 2020, during the Covid pandemic, it was the Brothers who put us in touch and introduced us to each other, as we all live in or around Turin. From there, as the number of people involved grew and the capacity to raise funds increased, the need arose to create a formal Association. This project officially started on October 11, 2021, with the establishment of Accanto a Kibera Onlus, to stand by the poorest of the poor.

 

In 2023, in light of regulatory changes, the Association transitioned from being an Onlus to a Third Sector Entity (ETS).

 

Our mission is as simple in its nature as it is complex in its implementation: Accanto a Kibera aims to bring concrete hope to places where, unfortunately, it is difficult to dream of a future different from hunger, lack of work, and violence. And we try to do this through the Brothers of Charity, who have been present in Africa for 40 years, supporting the poorest of the poor.

Specifically, Accanto a Kibera raises funds that are primarily directed towards educational and professional training projects.
